Professional Boundaries in Practice: Reducing Risk, Raising Standards

Concerns around professional boundaries and practitioner conduct are an increasing focus for regulators across manual therapy professions. Research examining complaints in physiotherapy, osteopathy and chiropractic highlights that professional conduct issues account for over half of all complaints, with themes including communication, interpersonal behaviour, and boundary violations.

Notably, evidence also shows that male practitioners and older clinicians are at higher risk of complaints, with a small proportion of practitioners accounting for a disproportionate number of cases—reinforcing the need for ongoing education and reflective practice.

This CPD session, delivered by the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC), will explore the evolving landscape of patient complaints, with particular focus on professional boundaries, consent, and safeguarding within manual therapy settings. Drawing on regulatory insights and interdisciplinary research, the session will examine how boundaries can become blurred in hands-on care, and how clinicians can better protect both patients and themselves.

Through case-based discussion based on actual complaints received by the GOSC, and practical guidance, attendees will:

  • Understand current trends and risk factors in complaints

  • Recognise early warning signs of boundary crossings

  • Improve understanding of what boundaries are in a clinical setting
  • Strengthen communication and consent processes
  • Embed professionalism into everyday clinical interactions

This session is essential for osteopaths and manual therapists seeking to maintain high standards of care, reduce complaint risk, and navigate increasingly complex professional expectations.
